Coach Profile

John T. Curtis, Jr. (J.T.) is the current Headmaster, Athletic Director and Head Football Coach of John Curtis Christian High School. He began teaching and coaching at JCCS in 1969. Coach Curtis spent three years at the University of Arkansas, where he signed a full athletic scholarship. He then transferred to Louisiana College and spent one season there, before coming home to work at JCCS. While working at JCCS, he continued his education where he received his bachelor’s degree from Loyola University. He would also receive his master’s degree from Loyola in Administration some years later. In 44 years as high school football coach he ranks 2nd all-time in wins with a career record of 520-54-6 on his way to 25 state championships.

Remarkably, his only losing season as a head coach was his first going 0-10. He has been inducted into the Louisiana College Hall of Fame, the LHSAA Hall of Fame, the Louisiana Sportswriter’s Hall of Fame as well as the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame. He is also the pastor of Coliseum Place Baptist Church, which now meets on the high school campus after the original church in the Central Business District of New Orleans burned down following Hurricane Katrina. J.T. is married to Lydia Curtis and has two sons, Johnny and Jeff, both of whom work at the school, and one daughter, Joanna.

John Curtis Christian High School is the very definition of what a powerhouse program looks like. In his 44 years of coaching the Patriots, John (J.T.) Curtis, has won 25 state championships (and 7 runner-up finishes) for the school that bears his and his father’s name. The late John Curtis, Sr. opened the River Ridge, Louisiana School in 1962 with just 16 students. Today, his wife Merle Curtis and their five children still work at the school along with eight grandchildren. When a program wins a state championship one considers it an amazing achievement, but winning 25 state championships in your school’s first 50 years is pure domination.

In route to their 25th state title this past season, the Patriots were the consensus national champion with five of the seven high school football polls ranking them #1 and Coach Curtis was named USA Today’s Coach of the Year. With a career record of 520-54-6, Coach Curtis knows how to dominate the competition, so when it comes to his coaches’ communications, he chooses the CoachComm Connex headset system. “CoachComm was able to meet all of our equipment needs, and more importantly, the support necessary to maximize its use, says Curtis. The bottom line is that CoachComm has delivered all they promised and more. I could not be more pleased with their company,” he adds.

“Connex solved those problems for us with its quick set up and dependability throughout the game.”

The Connex system offers the Patriots the quickest and easiest set up of any headset system which enables a coaching staff to spend more time coaching and less time worrying with their communication equipment. As Coach Curtis tells us, “Time spent before a game needs to be focused on the players and the preparation for the game, not muddling through equipment issues. Connex solved those problems for us with its quick set up and dependability throughout the game. Connex is an easy choice when it comes to headsets.”
