Joe Austin Head Football Coach

Coach Profile

Joe Austin was announced as Southwestern’s Head Football Coach in February 2012, and was charged with reinstating football at a school that hasn’t competed in the sport for over 62 years.

Austin came to Southwestern after transforming Hanover College’s football program in a short time frame. In three years at Hanover he took a team that was in a decline to a rising star in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference, finishing in second place the last two seasons. A former small-college athlete, Austin played quarterback at St. Ambrose University (Iowa) for two seasons. He suffered a broken vertebrae in his back six games into his sophomore season. The injury, which required reconstructive surgery, ended his playing career but jump started his coaching career.

On September 7, Southwestern University faced Texas Lutheran University in their first game in over sixty years. Southwestern disbanded its football team in  April 1951 due to budget constraints, but in the fall of 2011 its Board of Trustees voted to reinstate the program effective this season. Southwestern’s home games are being played on Bernard Birkelbach Field at the Georgetown Stadium Complex.

Southwestern hired Joe Austin in February of 2012 as Head Coach of the school’s new football program. Coach Austin is known for rebuilding struggling teams, making him well-suited to lead a startup program like Southwestern. Coach Austin most recently worked with Hanover College’s football program, transforming in three years a team in decline with consecutive losing seasons to finishing in second place the last two seasons.

In addition to reinstating football, Southwestern University will add women’s lacrosse to its roster of NCAA Division III intercollegiate sports. The school’s new president, Dr. Edward Burger believes Division III football will be a draw for new students. “Football has helped us recruit some terrific students who might otherwise not have come to Southwestern,” said President Burger. “It also has greatly enhanced student life on campus.”

“The only headsets I have worn as a head coach have been from CoachComm and I don’t expect that to change. When I took the new job at Southwestern University [they] were one of my first calls.”

The Pirates will be using Tempest FX to communicate this season. The flexible and expandable solutions CoachComm offers are just right for a new program like Southwestern. “The only headsets I have worn as a head coach have been from CoachComm and I don’t expect that to change. When I took the new job at Southwestern University [they] were one of my first calls,” says Coach Joe Austin.
